Meaning of Sewer Appurtenances

For effective operation and maintenance of the sewerage system, several sewer appurtenances are provided at regular intervals.

List of devices come under Sewer Appurtenances are :

  1. Manholes
  2. Lamp holes
  3. Clean-outs
  4. Catch basins
  5. Inverted siphons
  6. Storm regulators
  7. Grease and oil traps
  8. Flushing tanks
  9. Gullies

1. Manholes :
Manholes are masonry or R.C.C chambers, constructed at suitable intervals along the sewer lines, for providing access into them. they help in inspection, cleaning and maintenance.

2. Lamp holes :

Small openings on the sewers to permit insertion of lamp into the sewer. The obstructed light confirms the obstructions in the sewers.

3. Clean-outs :
A Clean-out is an inclined pipe extending from the ground and connected to the underground sewer, which is generally provided at the upper ends of lateral sewers in place of manholes.

4. Catch Basins
To settle down the grit, sand, debris etc., catch basins are provided, which are the street inlets provided with additional small settling basins.
5. Inverted Siphons
Whenever a sewer pipe has to be dropped below the hydraulic gradient line for passing it beneath a valley, a road, a railway, a stream, a tidal estuary or any other depression in the earth's surface or where it passes beneath some other obstructions in its path, it is well known as INVERTED SIPHON or a DEPRESSED SEWER or a SAG PIPE.

6. Storm Regulators
To divert the excess storm water into nearby streams, Storm regulators are constructed. These are of three types :
  • Leaping Weir
  • Overflow Weir
  • Siphon spillway

7. Grease and Oil traps
As the name itself suggest that these are the constructions made to trap the oil and grease from the sewage before entering into the sewer line.

8. Flushing Tanks
These are the devices which contain water to flush and clean the sewers especially at the dead end points and flat gradients where self cleansing velocities are not attainable.

9. Gullies
These are openings on the road surface to divert storm water into the ground storm water sewers(drains).
